Dunbar Beach

A bridge and steps lead from the lot toward the shore, then the way back climbs through soft sand. Pack only what you’re willing to carry uphill. The beach isn’t wheelchair accessible, though the lot’s picnic table and seasonal flush restrooms are accessible; potable water is available there too. Leashed dogs are allowed, but glass and beach fires aren’t. There are no lifeguards, and waves and rip currents can be hazardous, so check posted water warnings before swimming.

Swimming and sunbathing are the summer draw, but spring brings smelt fishing too. A separate permit isn’t required for that fishery; check current rules before you go.

Walk east along Lake Front Drive to see five Century of Progress houses from Chicago’s 1933 World’s Fair. They came to Beverly Shores afterward as demonstrations of modern design and home technology, including central air conditioning and dishwashers. They’re still private homes, so enjoy them from the public road and don’t enter the grounds.

The parking area itself has a broad view of Lake Michigan. At the beach, keep some dune grass or a strip of shoreline in the foreground so a photo shows more than open water.
