Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center is a small interpretive center in the State Park, near the north end of State Road 49. Stop in for an indoor introduction before or after the beach. Its exhibits interpret the dunes’ natural and cultural history, and a room looking onto outdoor feeders gives you a chance to watch local birds and squirrels. It’s an easy family stop; pair it with the beach rather than treating it as a major destination. Check the current State Park calendar before planning around a naturalist program.

The indoor feeder-viewing room is the standout: visitors repeatedly mention watching birds and squirrels at the feeders. It’s a watch-and-wait break, not a timed wildlife show, so animals may or may not come by during your visit.

Walk on to the beachTrail 7 connects the center with the beach and avoids the high dunes of the 3 Dune Challenge.

Trail 7 connects the center with the beach and avoids the high dunes of the 3 Dune Challenge. This stop is inside Indiana Dunes State Park, which has its own entrance admission; it’s separate from the other Indiana Dunes visitor center along IN-49. For a meal, the separate Dunes Pavilion by the beach serves meals, snacks, and ice cream. Food service and naturalist programs follow their own schedules, so check before making either the reason for your visit.

How the dunes formedAfter the last ice age, lake waves and wind shaped the sandy shore into dunes.

After the last ice age, lake waves and wind shaped the sandy shore into dunes. The oldest dunes in the park are about 4,000 years old; the tallest formed around 2,000 years ago as wind piled up sand. Some rise close to 200 feet, which gives the exhibits here a vivid landscape to explain.

A newer building in an old conservation storyThe Nature Center was built in 1990.

The Nature Center was built in 1990. Indiana Dunes State Park was established in 1925 after early-1900s advocates pushed to preserve the Dunes region. The center’s exhibit hall has since been refreshed to interpret the area’s natural and cultural history.
