Pros & cons
PROS
- High chance of moose sightings at a very short distance
- Unique landslide terrain with a natural rock-garden feel
CONS
- Buggy in summer; bring repellent
- Can be muddy and uneven due to landslide debris
Park at the main Maligne Lake lot near the Bald Hills kiosk; start up the Bald Hills Trail and turn left after about 200 m toward Moose Lake.
Give moose plenty of space; carry repellent for mosquitoes. Expect uneven, sometimes muddy footing over landslide boulders and roots. Stay on marked paths to protect delicate lichens and moss. No bikes.
Why go
Looking for a quick win near Maligne Lake? Moose Lake Loop delivers: a short, easy stroll with legit moose odds and a surprising dose of geology. The route threads through a mossy, lichen-draped “rock garden” shaped by a colossal prehistoric landslide that once dammed the valley and helped create Maligne Lake’s modern size.
The hike
It’s a 1.8-mile total loop (2.9 km), starting from the main Maligne Lake parking area. Follow the Bald Hills Trail for about 200 m, then branch left toward Moose Lake to complete the loop. Expect a gentle 200 ft/60 m of gain with some short ups and downs over forest floor and landslide debris. The path is easy but can be uneven or muddy in spots, especially after rain.
Scenery and wildlife
Moose Lake sits in a hollow among boulders left by the slide, often mirroring the sky and pines when the air is still—especially in the morning. Moose are commonly seen here (never guaranteed), either cooling off in the water or resting nearby. You’ll walk through lodgepole pine with dark hair lichens and soft mosses underfoot—stay on trail to protect these fragile carpets.
Crowd level and add-ons
This is a popular, family-friendly loop thanks to its short length and proximity to Maligne Lake’s amenities. If you want more shoreline views, connect to the nearby Mary Schäffer Loop or wander the lakeside area for a longer outing.
Best time to hike
Late spring through fall is prime, with calm morning light and increased wildlife activity tipping the scales for an early start. Summer can be buggy—bring repellent—and expect more people during peak hours.
Know before you go
- No bikes on this loop. Dogs allowed on leash. Not wheelchair accessible.
- The tread can be rooty/rocky with occasional mud from the landslide terrain.
- A Parks Canada entry pass is required for Jasper National Park.
- Pair the loop with a lakeside lunch or a boat tour at Maligne Lake to make a half-day of it.
