Maligne Lake Lakeshore Trail

This is the easy, crowd‑pleasing lakeside walk at the north end of Maligne Lake. The loop is 3.2 km/2.0 miles total, almost flat, and starts near the main parking and lodge/boathouse area. Expect constant water views framed by peaks like Leah and Opal, mixed with short forest stretches of pine, spruce, and subalpine fir. It’s a quick hit of classic Jasper scenery without the effort.

What you’ll see

The trail hugs the shore for big turquoise‑water panoramas, then ducks into cool forest where birdsong replaces boat noise. Interpretive signs cover local history and ecology, including Mary Schäffer’s role in popularizing the lake. Keep an eye out for moose along quieter coves and the very real possibility of bears moving through the area.

Maligne Lake is a major destination, so go early for calm water, softer light, and fewer people. Best season is late spring through early fall (May–October). Weather turns fast here—bring layers and a rain shell even on a sunny forecast. After rain, expect muddy patches.
