Exit Glacier Campground

Exit Glacier Campground is Kenai Fjords National Park's only frontcountry campground: 12 tent-only sites set among trees about a quarter-mile before the Exit Glacier Nature Center. It's a useful overnight base for the area's trails and nature center. Sites are reached by short paths from the campground parking area, so plan to carry your gear a little way in.

Sites are first-come, first-served, with no reservations. The campground often fills by early evening in July and August, so arrive earlier if you want a site. Each site allows up to two tents and eight people, with a 14-day stay limit. This is tent camping only: no RV sites, sleeping in vehicles, or overnight parking. The campground is the first turn on the left after about eight miles along Herman Leirer (Exit Glacier) Road from the Seward Highway. Snow usually makes the road inaccessible to cars from late October through mid-May.

A covered central shelter provides cooking and dining space, picnic tables, and shared food storage. Keep food preparation and storage there; food isn't allowed at individual sites. Vault toilets are beside the parking area. Sites #1 and #12 have accessible paths, and an accessible vault toilet is in the campground parking lot.

Exit Glacier flows out from the Harding Icefield. Around the campground, recessional moraines mark older glacier positions, while meltwater carries sediment across a broad braided outwash plain. Fine glacial rock flour gives streams a gray cast. It's a good place to notice how the glacier keeps changing the ground around this roadside corner of the park.
