Coniston Water: Gondola and the Shore

Overview

About Coniston Water

Why stop

  • Boat trips give the whole lake a sense of scale
  • Old Man and wooded shore views are excellent at calm light

Heads up

  • Popular shore facilities and parking fill quickly
  • Weather can erase the mountain views
Coniston Water is a long, deep lake beneath the Coniston Fells, with the Old Man rising above its western shore. Woods, farms, slate country, and open water keep changing as you move along it. This is one of the Lake District's best lakes for combining a big landscape with something to do on the water.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go early on a clear morning for calmer water, softer light, and a better chance of seeing the Old Man reflected. Summer afternoons are the busiest period around the boating centre and shore facilities. Late light can be excellent from the east side, but the fells disappear quickly in low cloud, so bring a waterproof layer even when the village looks bright. Allow extra time for parking if you are hiring equipment or catching a boat.

More about Coniston Water

The southern end around Coniston Boating Centre is the practical launch point for motorboats, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Coniston Launch and the Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola make the lake's scale easy to appreciate without committing to a long walk. Their stops also connect the lake with Brantwood and other shore points.

Coniston has more stories than scenery alone. Peel Island is widely associated with Wild Cat Island in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, while the lake's twentieth-century speed-record attempts are remembered locally and at the Ruskin Museum in Coniston village. The result is a rare mix of literary, industrial, and boating history in one landscape.

Best land-based optionsThis is a destination with several useful access points, not one single viewpoint.

This is a destination with several useful access points, not one single viewpoint. The Coniston-to-Torver route follows the southern shoreline for about 3.5 kilometres each way, with the option of returning by launch. At the north end, Monk Coniston gives access to a waterside route toward the village and onward walks toward Tarn Hows.

For a short visit, start near the boating centre or Waterhead and look down the length of the lake. For a quieter, more open perspective, try the northern end or one of the roadside viewpoints around the eastern shore. Parking, toilets, and food are concentrated at the developed access points rather than spread evenly around the water.
