Overview

About Old Man of Coniston

Why stop

  • Mining ruins and glacial tarns give the climb unusual character
  • Wide summit views over Coniston Water and the southern Lakes

Heads up

  • Steep, rough ground and exposed weather make it a full mountain day
At 802.4 metres, the Old Man of Coniston is a proper mountain day above Coniston rather than a quick viewpoint. The summit cairn and trig point sit on a broad, slate-built platform, with clear-weather views over Coniston Water and the southern Lake District. On an exceptionally clear day, Morecambe Bay, the Lancashire coast, and the Isle of Man can appear beyond the nearer fells.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Choose a clear, dry day when you can make the most of the long views and see the shape of the surrounding fells. Start early, or visit outside the busiest part of the day, for a quieter climb and softer light on Coniston Water. The summit is exposed, and rain, strong wind, snow, or ice can turn the rocky upper section into a much harder proposition. In poor visibility, the views disappear and navigation matters more, so this is a good walk to postpone rather than force.

Guide

More about Old Man of Coniston

Route and footingRoutes from Coniston village are roughly 9 to 11.

Routes from Coniston village are roughly 9 to 11.5 kilometres with about 600 to 800 metres of ascent, depending on the start and whether you make a loop. The direct route climbs through Church Beck and the old mines before reaching Low Water and the steep upper slopes. The approach from Walna Scar Road is shorter, but the lane to its fell-gate car park is narrow and steep. The Coppermines and Old Man car park is another useful starting point below the mine workings.

Expect rough paths, loose rock, steep zigzags, and sections that can be indistinct in mist. A map and compass are sensible, especially above Low Water. There are no services on the fell, so carry food, water, warm windproof layers, and sturdy footwear. Keep to established paths around the old workings and give yourself time to descend safely.

Why goThe summit is rewarding, but the approach is what gives this place its character.

The summit is rewarding, but the approach is what gives this place its character. Paths pass the glacial tarn of Low Water, old quarry workings, spoil heaps, and remnants of the mountain's industrial past. A longer loop by Walna Scar Road, The Cove, and Goat's Water brings you beneath the dramatic crags of Dow Crag before climbing to the summit.
