Overview

About Steam Yacht Gondola

Why stop

  • Historic boat with superb lake-and-fell views

Heads up

  • Seasonal sailings and limited capacity
Steam Yacht Gondola is one of the Lake District's most distinctive ways to see a lake. This restored Victorian steam yacht leaves Coniston Pier and glides across Coniston Water with the fells rising around it. The boat itself is the attraction: black-and-cream paintwork, a graceful pointed bow, working steam machinery, and a richly finished saloon make this feel like a small piece of living transport history rather than a generic sightseeing cruise.

Access

The jetty is mostly level, but boarding requires a step and crew assistance. Full wheelchair access is not possible: wheelchair users need to be ambulant for the step onto the boat, and the level rear area is uncovered. Steps lead to the lower deck and forward seating. Check the current access arrangements before travelling if anyone in your group has limited mobility.

Choose a shorter mountain cruise for a focused taste of the lake, a Heart of Coniston route for more of the cultural landscape, or a full-lake sailing when you want the journey to be the main event. The route can include views toward the Old Man of Coniston and stops at Brantwood or Monk Coniston, where a boat trip can connect with a longer visit or walk. Dogs on leads are welcome in the non-carpeted areas.

Gondola was commissioned in 1859 for the Coniston Railway Company and entered service in 1860. After falling into disrepair, she was extensively rebuilt by the National Trust in the late 1970s and relaunched in 1980. Some original ironwork survives, while the replacement hull, steam plant, and period-style saloon keep the character of the original vessel alive. The engine room and the open deck give the trip two different moods: mechanical theatre at the stern, quiet water and fell views at the bow.

Plan it wellSailings are seasonal, broadly from spring into autumn, and capacity is limited.

Sailings are seasonal, broadly from spring into autumn, and capacity is limited. Book ahead when you can, especially if a particular route matters, and allow time to park and reach the jetty before departure. The nearby public car park is pay-and-display, with toilets at the boating centre. There is no dedicated Gondola car park.

The water is often colder and windier than the shore suggests. Bring a warm, windproof layer even on a bright day; the enclosed seating and onboard blankets help, but the outer deck is where the best sense of motion and scenery comes from. Early or late light is usually kinder for photographs, while a calm, overcast day can make the hills and reflections feel especially atmospheric.
