Before you go

Parking

Lake Road car park at Coniston Boating Centre, LA21 8AN. Accessible toilets and cafe at the start; route ends at Torver jetty.

Best time to go

The open shoreline gives long views across Coniston Water to wooded Grizedale and to Brantwood on the far bank, with the Old Man of Coniston rising behind you to the west. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours one way with normal stops. Low light early and late in the day sits well on the water and the fells, and the shore sections are the most rewarding for photographs.

Safety

Two short 1:8 slopes and multiple gates and bridges; Class 2 or 3 mobility scooters only. Keep dogs on a short lead near livestock.

Point-to-point and one way, 2.18 miles (3.5 km) from the Lake Road car park at Coniston Boating Centre to Torver jetty. The return leg is not part of the route, so plan to walk or roll back the same way or arrange a lake crossing.

Leave the Boating Centre car park on the smooth stone footpath beside Lake Road, cross the bridge and pass business units and kissing gates, then follow the track to Coniston Hall Farm. Tarmac skirts the campsite before a gravel path leads through a wicket gate to the shore. Continue south along Coniston Water past a double kissing gate and the footbridge at Hoathwaite, then head inland on a track into Torver Common Wood and over a final footbridge to the jetty. The payoff is an easy-going lakeshore journey rather than a summit climb or a full circuit of the lake.

Difficulty and surfacesGraded For many.

Graded For many. Underfoot it is mostly smooth path, tarmac, compacted track and cycleway, and gravel, with no stiles. Two short slopes of about 1:8 need care: one on the access down to the lakeside and one just after the bridge. If you are using a mobility scooter, a Class 2 or 3 machine is required.

Expect several kissing gates, a wicket gate, a double kissing gate and three bridges, including footbridges at Hoathwaite and at the approach to Torver jetty. Allow time for gates if you are pushing a wheelchair or buggy.

There is a car park at Coniston Boating Centre, along with accessible toilets and a cafe. Fill water bottles and use facilities before you set off, since there is nothing guaranteed along the way and shade is patchy on the open shore. This is a public-access route on rights of way and farm tracks, so you share it with farm traffic, campsite users and cyclists in places.

Dogs are welcome under normal countryside rules: keep them under close control and on a short lead near livestock, and be ready for gates and grazing land around Coniston Hall Farm and Hoathwaite. From Torver jetty the Coniston Launch offers an alternative way back to Coniston, subject to its own arrangements, so check before relying on it and be prepared to walk the return.
