Parking

Use the informal Wasdale Head Green parking by the Wasdale Head Inn. It is separate from the National Trust Lake Head car park farther down Wastwater. Spaces are limited, and the approach road is long and narrow; do not block farm or lane access.

Best time to go

Late spring through early autumn gives the longest daylight and the most settled spells, though weather here changes fast in any month. Fine weekends bring plenty of people on the Sty Head paths and the summit, while the Moses' Trod and Gavel Neese side tends to be quieter. Early starts are worth it for parking, for softer light on Wastwater, and for having the summit before the mid-morning arrivals. Autumn brings low light and strong colour in the valley, and the walk in and out of Wasdale Head is often the best photography of the day.

Safety

The upper route is exposed, with loose scree, steep boulders and unprotected drops. Poor visibility makes the cairned path and junctions around Beck Head and the summit difficult to follow. Snow and ice require winter mountain skills. Water and shelter are unreliable.

Hiking Great Gable from Wasdale Head

What you're signing up forThis is a 5.9-mile (9.

This is a 5.9-mile (9.6 km) complete loop from Wasdale Head with roughly 850 to 900 m of ascent to the 898.8 m summit of Great Gable. Most walkers take about 4.5 hours, and 4 to 6 hours is a fair range once you allow for footing, photo stops and navigation. Difficulty sits at 7/10: serious mountain terrain, and not a first fell walk.

You start on the green at Wasdale Head and follow the old Moses' Trod corridor, which begins as a rough bridleway with rocky and boggy patches. It steepens hard up Gavel Neese, then grinds through loose ground to Beck Head, the saddle between Gable and Kirk Fell. From there the north-west ridge is bouldery and needs mild hands-on scrambling in places before the stony summit plateau opens out. The payoff is a wide view over Wastwater and Wasdale, across to the Scafells, and out toward Ennerdale and the western fells. The summit also holds the Fell and Rock Climbing Club memorial plaque. A short, exposed detour south brings you to the Westmorland Cairn, which is arguably the better viewpoint if conditions are calm.

The descent off the south-east side toward Sty Head is steep, rocky and loose, and it is where tired legs get caught out. Sty Head itself is an obvious junction, marked by the mountain-rescue stretcher box, and from there the main path back down to Wasdale is much more straightforward while still being mountain ground. Wear proper boots with grip and expect slow, deliberate walking on the upper sections.

Weather, route-finding and safetyThe whole upper route is open to wind, rain, cloud, snow and ice, and there is no dependable…

The whole upper route is open to wind, rain, cloud, snow and ice, and there is no dependable shelter or water on the way. In poor visibility the cairned upper paths and the junctions around Beck Head and the summit plateau demand competent map-and-compass work or an equivalent skill set. Winter conditions turn this into a full winter mountain day needing appropriate gear and experience.

Start from the informal village green parking at Wasdale Head, near the Wasdale Head Inn, rather than the larger lake-side car park farther down Wastwater. Space is limited and first-come, the approach road is long and narrow, and the whole valley is remote, so plan your arrival and your exit accordingly. No trail-specific permit is needed for the public route.

Dogs and honest drawbacksDogs are legally allowed on the public route, but the steep loose ground and the bouldery…

Dogs are legally allowed on the public route, but the steep loose ground and the bouldery scrambling above Beck Head make this a poor choice for most dogs. If you do bring one, keep it under close control around livestock and wildlife. The other honest caveats: the lower track is unglamorous going, the ascent above Gavel Neese is relentless, and the Sty Head descent is punishing on knees. If you want the valley scenery without the exposure and the climbing, a lower-level walk around Wasdale and Wastwater delivers plenty at a fraction of the effort.
