Overview

About Whinlatter Forest

Why stop

  • Big fell views open up from forest tracks and clearings
  • Easy to build a family day around walks, play, and wildlife

Heads up

  • Wet weather makes some climbs and gravel tracks slick
  • The visitor centre area can feel busy on popular weekends
Whinlatter is England's only true mountain forest, a working plantation high above Keswick that feels different from the open fells around it. Waymarked gravel roads, surfaced paths, and forest tracks make it easy to choose a short walk or build a longer outing. When the cloud lifts, clearings and higher routes open onto Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater, Keswick, and the surrounding fells.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go on a dry weekday morning if you want the quietest paths and the best chance of open fell views. The forest is a useful rainy-day option, but steeper sections and gravel tracks can become slick and muddy, so wear shoes with dependable grip and carry a waterproof layer. Popular weekends can feel busy around the visitor centre. If you plan to connect onto the surrounding fells, allow extra time and treat the weather as mountain weather, not town weather.

  • For an easy introduction: the Revelin Moss trail is a signed 1 mile (1.6 km) easy route with Grisedale Pike as a dramatic backdrop.
  • For families: waymarked paths, play areas, and the Gruffalo sculptures give children a reason to keep moving. Some sections still climb, so a pushchair-friendly label does not mean every route is flat.
  • For cyclists: the dedicated routes combine real climbs with rewarding descents. Bike hire is available at the forest, but bring water and expect wet rock and gravel to get slippery after rain.
Wildlife and atmosphereKeep your eyes open for red squirrels, deer, badgers, and foxes, especially where the forest…

Keep your eyes open for red squirrels, deer, badgers, and foxes, especially where the forest quietens down. Sightings are never guaranteed, so slow down and listen rather than treating wildlife as a checklist. The forest is managed for timber as well as recreation, so planted conifers, forestry roads, and signs of ongoing woodland management are part of the experience.

Practical planNavigate to the main visitor centre on the B5292 Whinlatter Pass rather than a similarly named…

Navigate to the main visitor centre on the B5292 Whinlatter Pass rather than a similarly named fell or roadside point. The visitor centre has an information point, forest shop, café, toilets, and trail information; picnic tables are also available in the main area and at some outlying car parks. The centre is about 50 metres from the main car park via a sloped path, and there is an accessible toilet in the building. The main car park has four accessible bays.

Why stopThis is a good choice when you want several kinds of day out in one stop.

This is a good choice when you want several kinds of day out in one stop. It is not just a woodland stroll: the forest has a substantial walking network, the Lake District's longest purpose-built mountain-bike trails, and family activities around the visitor centre.
