Overview

About Crummock Water

Why stop

  • Dramatic lake-and-fell views with a quieter feel than Buttermere

Heads up

  • The full circuit is rough, boggy, and scrambly in places
Crummock Water is the quieter, wilder companion to Buttermere: a long, clear lake set beneath Mellbreak, Grasmoor, Rannerdale Knotts, Red Pike and High Stile. The best low-effort reveal is through Lanthwaite Wood, where the trees open onto the lake and the fells all at once. Come for the shoreline views, a quiet picnic or paddle, and the chance to walk a full circuit rather than for a built attraction.

Swimming is allowed, while canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and rowing boats require a permit; sailing and powered craft are not allowed under the small-lakes rules. Check the current permit arrangements before bringing equipment, and treat the water as cold, open water. Otters leave signs around favoured shores but are rarely seen; the woods hold red squirrels and deer, and the clear, low-nutrient water supports Arctic char and brown trout. Bring binoculars and a waterproof layer. For photographs, the woodland opening and boathouse give strong low-level compositions; higher paths around Rannerdale Knotts or Red Pike show the lake as a long ribbon between the fells.

The simplest visit starts at Lanthwaite Wood car park near Scale Hill. A gentle 1.25 km (0.8 mi) route each way follows a forest track to the shore, with a further stretch to the boathouse. The surface is rough in places, but robust wheelchairs and pushchairs should cope with the approach. The longer circuit is about 9 miles and is a different proposition, with uneven paths, boggy ground, gates, bridges and some scrambling. Use sturdy, waterproof footwear and leave time for weather delays. From Keswick, approach via the B5292 over Whinlatter Pass to Lorton, then the B5289; stay right toward Loweswater and turn into the car park at the bottom of Scale Hill.

There are no facilities on the shore route, so bring water and food rather than counting on a café or restroom at the lake.

Why it mattersCrummock Water and Buttermere were once one lake, separated after the last ice age as erosion…

Crummock Water and Buttermere were once one lake, separated after the last ice age as erosion and streams built the low spit between them. The clear, cool water and rocky Skiddaw-slate surroundings give the valley a strong geological character, while the lakes and shoreline are protected for their wildlife. Keep to paths around Rannerdale's bluebells, keep dogs under control around livestock, and avoid crossing wet peat.
