Derwentwater and Friar’s Crag

Overview

About Friar's Crag

Why stop

  • Big Derwentwater and Borrowdale views for little effort

Heads up

  • The final edge is exposed and the viewpoint can be busy
Friar's Crag is a short lakeside promontory with one of the most rewarding views on the Derwentwater shore. From the bench at the end, the lake opens toward Cat Bells, Walla Crag, Maiden Moor, and the Jaws of Borrowdale, with wooded islands and the water filling the foreground. It is a big landscape for a small amount of walking.

Best time to go

The bench is a popular destination, so arrive early or choose a weekday if you want the clearest view and more room at the end of the path. Morning light can soften the hills and reflections, while a clear evening gives the walk a second identity as a stargazing stop. Bring a torch and binoculars after dark, and carry a waterproof layer because the exposed lakeshore can feel much cooler than Keswick.

The woodland and nearby fields are worth slowing down for. Tawny owls are especially noted here in January and February, and barn owls have been seen hunting beside the crag. You are more likely to hear or glimpse wildlife away from the busiest part of the path than while waiting for the end bench.

Start at Lakeside car park beside the Theatre by the Lake and follow the shore toward the launch jetties. The direct walk is roughly 1.2 kilometres round trip and takes about 15 to 30 minutes at an easy pace. A good stone track and mostly flat paths make this one of the gentler ways to reach a major Derwentwater view. Longer return options through Cockshott Wood and the surrounding paths extend the outing to roughly 2.5 to 3.2 kilometres.

The direct route is described as level and accessible, but the last stretch becomes an unsurfaced track and the end has an unprotected edge. Keep children close and do not treat the viewpoint as a place to scramble down the rocks. Dogs are welcome outdoors but should stay on a lead. The Lakeside car park has designated spaces, and an accessible public toilet is beside it; cafés and other refreshments are available around the Theatre by the Lake and lakeside area.

Why stopThe viewpoint also carries some of Keswick's literary and conservation history.

The viewpoint also carries some of Keswick's literary and conservation history. A slate memorial to John Ruskin stands near the path, and the crag was given to the nation in memory of Canon Rawnsley, one of the National Trust's founders. The name comes from the belief that monks once embarked here on pilgrimages to St Herbert's Island.
