Overview

About Windermere Jetty Museum

Why stop

  • Historic boats plus visible conservation work
  • Wide lake-and-fell views from the café and jetties

Heads up

  • Boat trips depend on weather and availability
  • Outdoor spaces can be cold and wet in changeable weather
Windermere Jetty is the Lake District's hands-on introduction to the lake's boating culture. The galleries and boathouse hold around 40 historic vessels, from sailing craft and rowing boats to steam launches, motorboats, and record-breaking speed boats. Interactive displays, objects, oral histories, and curiosities give the collection a human story, while large windows and walkways keep the water close.

More about Windermere Jetty Museum

More than a museumThis is a working site, not a static hall.

This is a working site, not a static hall. Look through the conservation workshop windows for boatbuilders at work, then check the boat yard, wharf, and jetties for vessels being restored or prepared for the lake. Heritage trips on restored wooden boats add the best sense of place when weather and availability cooperate. The model boating pond, old fire station, picnic area, and family activities give younger visitors something to do between exhibits.

  • Allow a couple of hours if you want the galleries, conservation areas, lakeshore, and café rather than a quick look.
  • The museum is a good wet-weather option, but the jetties, shore, and outdoor seating are exposed to wind and rain. Bring a warm layer and a waterproof jacket.
  • Go early or later in the day, and outside school-holiday peaks, for calmer galleries and softer reflections on the water. Midday can be busier, especially when events or boat trips are running.
  • Heritage boat trips follow a seasonal pattern and are weather-dependent. Treat them as an optional extra and check availability before building your day around one.
  • The museum is on one level with step-free access, ramps, accessible toilets, and wheelchairs or portable stools available. Assistance dogs are welcome in the galleries; other dogs can use the grounds and café on a lead.
  • It is an easy walk of about 12 minutes from Bowness Pier. On-site parking is limited and rules can change seasonally, so read the signs carefully and allow extra time if arriving by car.
A little historyThe museum stands on the former site of Windermere Steamboat Museum.

The museum stands on the former site of Windermere Steamboat Museum. The core collection was built by local boat collector George Pattinson, who often saved boats that were at risk. The museum's current operator took ownership of the site in 2007, and the redeveloped museum opened in 2019.

The contemporary, weathered-copper-clad buildings are arranged to frame the lake and surrounding landscape while echoing the site's industrial dock history. That architecture is part of the visit: the collection feels connected to Windermere rather than sealed away from it.

The draw is the combination of historic boats, visible conservation, and lake setting, not a huge indoor collection. If you only want open fell scenery, there are better places to spend your time. If you are travelling with children, want a meaningful all-weather stop, or are curious about how a lake's working history is preserved, this earns a proper visit. Keep children close around the jetties and water's edge.
