Blackwell: A House Full of Craft

Overview

About Blackwell, the Arts & Crafts House

Why stop

  • Nearly original Arts & Crafts interiors you can explore at close range
  • Windermere and Coniston Fells views from the terraces

Heads up

  • Some rooms still require steps despite the first-floor lift
  • Not a quick scenic pullout from Bowness
Blackwell is a rare chance to walk through an Arts & Crafts house that still feels like a complete work of design rather than a room full of isolated objects. Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott designed it as a holiday home for Manchester brewery owner Sir Edward Holt, and almost every part of the building earns a closer look: carved wood, stained glass, mosaic floors, tiled fireplaces, wrought iron, hessian wall hangings, and finely worked plaster.

Getting there and access

Blackwell is about 1.5 miles from Bowness-on-Windermere, off the A5074 via the B5360. Follow signs for the house and use the free on-site car park. You can also take a taxi from Windermere station. Walking from Bowness is possible, but the route includes a busy road, so it is less relaxing than the short drive.

The visitor route has level access on the main floors, and a lift reaches the first floor. Because this is a historic building, some rooms still have steps and are not wheelchair accessible. Accessible toilets, Blue Badge spaces, portable stools, bike racks, and pushchair access are available. Assistance dogs are welcome in the tea room, but dogs are not allowed inside the house.

More about Blackwell, the Arts & Crafts House

What to expectAllow one to two hours if you want to see the rooms properly, sit in the window seats, and walk…

Allow one to two hours if you want to see the rooms properly, sit in the window seats, and walk the terraces and gardens. The south-facing rooms bring in good natural light, while the gardens open the view toward Windermere and the Coniston Fells. The tea room occupies the former kitchen and scullery and keeps an original fireplace, with a craft shop beside it.

A weekday visit or an early start usually gives you more breathing room in the rooms. Summer weekends are the busiest period. The house is a good wet-weather choice, but the terraces and garden are exposed, so bring a light waterproof layer in any season. For photographs, soft daylight is kinder to the interiors than harsh midday sun; late afternoon is especially good for the lake-facing terraces.

Good to knowThis is an admission attraction, not a quick roadside viewpoint.

This is an admission attraction, not a quick roadside viewpoint. The best part is the density of small details, so slow down and look at door furniture, window catches, fireplaces, and the way the rooms frame the landscape. Blackwell was completed in 1901, later served as a school and office, and was restored before opening to the public in 2001.

Why stopThe house is also a small gallery. Look for furniture and objects associated with Morris & Co.

The house is also a small gallery. Look for furniture and objects associated with Morris & Co., William Arthur Smith Benson, Pilkingtons, Ruskin Pottery, Ernest Gimson, Stanley Webb Davies, and Baillie Scott himself. The result is more immersive than a conventional historic-house visit because the architecture, furnishings, and decorative details were conceived together.
