Before you go

Parking

Start at Broadgate Meadow Car Park in Grasmere, then use the rear-corner path beside the River Rothay. It is paid parking, and buses serve the village.

Best time to go

Daylight and clear visibility bring out the fell views. Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light and a quieter feel, and autumn suits the woodland section. For a more focused riverside walk, Grasmere Riverside is close by, while the full Grasmere lake circuit is longer and more scenic.

Safety

The 50 m gravel slope through Butharlyp Howe reaches 1:5, with a further descent up to 1:8. Judge it before setting out with a wheelchair or mobility scooter; class 2 or 3 scooters only. Short quiet-road sections have no pavement, and dogs should remain under control near wildlife and livestock.

A circular village loop from Broadgate Meadow Car Park, walked anti-clockwise, with a complete official distance of 1.81 km / 1.12 miles and about 1 hour on foot. Rated easy overall, 2/10.

The sequence runs:

The mapped line follows the Allan Bank branch. A short dead-end extension leads off the new gravel path, and that spur sits outside the stored distance.

  • Broadgate Meadow Car Park, then tarmac beside the River Rothay through the recreation ground
  • Broadgate pavement and a short access road
  • Butharlyp Howe woodland
  • Easedale Road, then the new gravel path below Allan Bank
  • Allan Bank road, Moss Parrock village green and College Street
  • Village roads back to the car park
Surfaces and gradientMostly tarmac and firm gravel.

Mostly tarmac and firm gravel. The one demanding stretch is a gravel slope of roughly 50 m through Butharlyp Howe that reaches 1:5, with two resting places, followed by a descent of up to 1:8. That gradient is the reason the official access grade is for some rather than for all.

  • Pushchairs and some wheeled equipment manage the loop if users are comfortable with those slopes
  • Mobility scooters should be class 2 or 3
Views and wildlifeThe open middle section gives views toward Helm Crag, Dunmail Raise, Tarn Crag and Sergeant Man.

The open middle section gives views toward Helm Crag, Dunmail Raise, Tarn Crag and Sergeant Man. Butharlyp Howe is wooded and shaded, while Allan Bank and the village streets add cultural interest. Along the river, look for dippers, wagtails and kingfishers.

Broadgate Meadow Car Park is the paid primary access point, and no route-specific permit was found. A few short quiet-road sections have no pavement, so take care with traffic. Ordinary dogs are welcome on the public route when kept under control and in sight around other walkers, wildlife and livestock.
