Wardsboro Road Trail

This follows the old Wardsboro road 7.82 miles one way, from its crossing with Padanarum Road to NY Route 8; it is a point-to-point walk, not a loop. DEC's current trail text says 5.6 miles for those endpoints, while the full mapped road line measures 7.82 miles. Plan for the longer figure until the easement alignment and mileage are clarified. Arrange a shuttle; walking back doubles the distance. Allow roughly four to five hours.

From the southern end, the gravel two-track rolls past ferny clearings, old stone walls and Wardsboro Cemetery, then follows wetlands and stream crossings past old culverts and bridges. The road climbs toward a small pass on its northern half; expect rocky, washed-out footing and side roads that can make the old corridor less obvious. A beaver-pond outlet and mixed maple, beech, yellow birch and hemlock woods are among the route's more distinctive stretches. There is no reported summit vista; the interest is the old road and the settlement remains.

Wardsboro was a through-road and farming hamlet connecting Bolton and Hague. A mid-19th-century account describes 23 small farms, two schools and two sawmills in the valley; most residents had left by the 1920s. Near the southern stretch, Wardsboro Cemetery has 32 gravestones, with burials recorded from 1842 through 1909. Stone walls, cellar holes and old side roads are the visible traces of that community; stay on the public corridor rather than entering adjacent clearings or camps.

The route crosses the Ti-Hague Easement, and DEC warns visitors to respect private property. Keep to the mapped corridor. The exact legal alignment and route-specific pet rule were not established, so check with DEC before setting out or bringing a pet. No formal parking lots were confirmed at the two endpoints; an older field account mentions roadside parking. Confirm legal pullouts at both ends before arranging a shuttle.
