Overview

About Blyth Homestead

Why stop

  • Restored homestead with a rare look at Top End pastoral history

Heads up

  • Rough 4WD-only access makes it a committed side trip
This is the human history stop on the Reynolds River track, and it earns a slot on the drive. Harry Sargent and his family established the homestead in 1928, and they also built and operated a nearby tin mine. The place was abandoned in the early 1960s and has since been restored, so what you walk up to is a straightforward record of how hard life was in the early Top End pastoral and mining country.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The track and the site are typically inaccessible between November and April through the tropical wet season, so plan for the dry months. Early morning or late afternoon is the pick: the light is softer on the corrugated iron and timber verandah, and the drive is more pleasant outside the heat of the middle of the day.

Getting there

Four-wheel drive only. The homestead is one of the destinations along the Reynolds Track, a 44 km rough 4WD route between Tolmer and Wangi Falls, with a southern connection out to Daly River Road. Treat it as part of a full day of slow driving rather than a quick roadside detour. As with any rough remote 4WD day in the Top End, it is sensible to set out with plenty of drinking water, food for the day and a capable, well prepared vehicle.

“Blyth Homestead is coming up along the Reynolds Track. Harry Sargent and his family established this corrugated-metal home in 1928, when pastoral work and tin mining made for a hard life in this remote country.”

  • A single low corrugated-metal homestead with a broad wraparound verandah, rough timber posts, and a rusted and silver roof over a central front gable.
  • Sandy pale ground and dense dry tropical woodland with pandanus close around the homestead.
  • An interpretive display covering the trials and tragedies of this remote site, plus a visitor book you can sign.
  • You are free to walk around the old homestead house and look it over at your own pace.
How it differs from other Litchfield stopsMuch of what draws people to this park is water: plunge pools, falls and swimming.

Much of what draws people to this park is water: plunge pools, falls and swimming. This stop is built heritage instead, a restored homestead to read and walk around. It sits on the rough interior track rather than the sealed loop, so it feels remote even though it is inside the same park. The name also carries the older pastoral history of the area, the former block associated with the hundred of Blyth.

The visitor setup here is deliberately simple: a carpark, a picnic area, and the interpretive display at the restored homestead. It is a family-friendly stop in the sense that there is space to sit, read and wander between the homestead and the woodland around it.

Honest drawbacksIt is a small site.
  • It is a small site. If you are not interested in pastoral or mining history, the payoff will feel thin next to the effort of a long, rough drive to reach it.
  • The 4WD access is genuinely rough, so it suits confident drivers rather than anyone hoping for an easy detour.
  • The ground around the homestead is sandy.
