Overview

About Tjaynera Falls Campground (Sandy Creek)

Why stop

  • Secluded base for a waterfall swim

Heads up

  • Requires a capable 4WD and a rough seasonal track
Tjaynera Falls Campground, also known as Sandy Creek, sits well off the sealed tourist loop on the Reynolds Track, a 4WD road running between Tolmer and Wangi Falls. Because it can only be reached by four-wheel drive, it draws far less traffic than the park's easily accessible waterholes, and the campsites are recessed into bush so the place feels genuinely quiet. It works best as a base for people who want a swim, a walk and a fire pit without a crowd.

Before you go

Best time to go

The dry season is the window for this place: the swimming hole is a dry-season proposition and the access track is seasonal, with wet-season road closures affecting the route. Because access is limited to 4WD, the site is usually quieter than the park's more accessible waterholes, though visitor numbers do rise through the peak months. For photography, early or late light falls more softly on the layered rock and surrounding foliage than the harsh middle of the day.

Camping and facilities

  • Category B bush campsite with toilets and showers, plus picnic tables and BBQs.
  • Designated fire pits only; collect fallen timber only from the main Litchfield Park Road, not from around camp.
  • Bins are not provided, so carry all rubbish out with you.
  • Boil all water before drinking.
  • Wash or bathe with soap or detergent at least 50 m from waterways.
  • No pets, generators or fireworks.
  • Nearest supplies are at Batchelor, roughly a 90 km drive, some of it on 4WD track, so arrive fully stocked.

More about Tjaynera Falls Campground (Sandy Creek)

The walk to the fallsThe defining experience is the 1.7 km walk (3.4 km return, about 1.

The defining experience is the 1.7 km walk (3.4 km return, about 1.5 hours, Grade 3 moderate) that starts at the car park and follows the creek. It winds through an open valley lined with paperbarks, passes a hillside of cycads, and ends at a clear plunge pool at the base of the falls, where swimming is allowed. The final stretch turns rocky and steeper, so wear proper shoes rather than thongs and carry water for the round trip. Allow more time than the sign suggests if you plan to swim.

Sites are designated and must be booked and paid for online before you go; payment is not taken in the park. You also need an NT Parks Visitor Pass. A campground host is on site during the peak season from May to September.

Honest drawbacksThis is a rough, remote option, not a drive-up swim.

This is a rough, remote option, not a drive-up swim. You need a capable 4WD, self-sufficiency, and tolerance for a corrugated approach. Amenities are basic, the walk in and out is a commitment in the heat, and the pool is not available year-round. If your vehicle or timing does not suit, the more accessible falls elsewhere in the park are the sensible alternative.

Nearby on the same trackThe historic Blyth Homestead, built in 1929, stands about 1.

The historic Blyth Homestead, built in 1929, stands about 1.7 km north of the falls, and Surprise Creek Falls is also reached from the Reynolds Track, so the drive can be strung together into a full day.
