“If you take a riverside walk in the park, scan the stones in a fast stream for a small dark bird with a bright white chest. A dipper bobs up and down on its legs, which is how it gets its name.”

Balquhidder Braes is a small, family-run holiday park on the hillside at Balquhidder Station, between Strathyre and Lochearnhead. It mixes self-catering timber lodges — many with wraparound balconies and optional hot tubs — with touring and static caravan pitches and overnight spaces for motorhomes, campervans and tents. It is a place to stay rather than an attraction to tick off: choose it when you want a quiet base for the central Trossachs, Loch Earn and Balquhidder country.

What makes it usefulThe park sits beside the Rob Roy Way and National Cycle Route 7, with woodland paths around it.

The park sits beside the Rob Roy Way and National Cycle Route 7, with woodland paths around it. The lodges look over the Braes o' Balquhidder, and the site is a good starting point for walking or cycling without moving the car. If you are bringing a dog, Standard and Superior cabins allow pets, while Deluxe cabins do not. A hot tub is not standard in every lodge, so check the accommodation title.

Touring guests have a serviced toilet and shower block, washing-up area, laundry and chemical-toilet disposal. Most touring pitches are hardstanding, and the park's spring water is filtered and UV-treated on site. The park is on the A84, so a car is useful for Loch Katrine, Killin and other attractions; The Golden Larches Café is across the road if you want food close by. For a stay that doubles as the day's walking base, the direct route access is the big advantage. For a full-service resort with on-site dining, look elsewhere.
