Overview

About Faerie Hollow — Loch Lubnaig

Why stop

  • Distinctive stone-and-timber art beside a calm loch view

Heads up

  • Small stop that can feel busy on fine summer days
This is a natural grassy hollow nestled among shrubs, right beside the small picnic site at the south end of Loch Lubnaig, with the water and Ben Ledi filling the view across the loch. What sets it apart from an ordinary lochside pullout is the specialist metalwork set into the spot, carrying a verse by local bard Alexander Campbell. The piece, Now Winter's wind sweeps, reflects on our place in the natural cycles and on simply appreciating the surroundings.

Best time to go

The loch sits in a bowl of hills, with Ben Ledi, Benvane and Ben Vorlich around it, so the installation photographs well with water, wooded bank and mountains in one frame. Summer can be busy at the lochside, while winter feels far quieter, which is when the hollow is at its most contemplative. A short visit works, but give yourself long enough to read the verse and watch the light move on the water.

Getting there

  • On the A84 between Callander and Strathyre, roughly 6.5 km (just under 4 miles) north of Callander, about five miles before Balquhidder.
  • Use the south car park, the first one you reach coming from Callander and the closest to town.
  • Easy to reach by car or by bicycle, so it suits a short break on a longer drive or ride through the Trossachs.

More about Faerie Hollow — Loch Lubnaig

Honest notesThis is a small roadside spot, not a walk or an attraction with an itinerary.
  • This is a small roadside spot, not a walk or an attraction with an itinerary. Manage expectations and pair it with other stops.
  • Do not count on facilities here. The larger Loch Lubnaig site nearer Strathyre is the one with picnic benches, barbecue stands and toilets.
  • Parking at the south car park is limited in feel, and it is the nearest to Callander, so it can fill on fine days.
  • Loch Lubnaig is popular with paddlers and open-water swimmers, but treat this as loch-wide context, not a launch or swim area. If you do get in the water anywhere on the loch, note that it gets deep quickly and stays cold.

The name carries the same idea: Sloc is Scots Gaelic for grassy hollow, and Sìtheanach stands for the faerie people of local mythology, which is why it also goes by Sloc-Nan-Sithenach and Faerie Hollow. It is designed as a place to sit and linger rather than to tick off in a minute, and it is the first feature of the BLiSS Trail.
