Trail guide
Creag an Tuirc is a 1.55-mile round-trip out-and-back from Balquhidder Parish Church to a cairned knoll above the village. It is short, but the climb is steep overall; this feels like a proper uphill walk, not a gentle loop. The summit marks the ancient gathering place of Clan MacLaren. Its Gaelic name means “Boar’s Rock,” and a bench beside the cairn gives you a reason to stop once you reach it.
Start beside the old church, where Rob Roy MacGregor’s grave lies between his wife and sons. Follow the green signposts out of the churchyard and up the track. At the Kirkton Glen forestry sign, bear right. The track climbs through woodland for about 400 metres to a hydro building; just beyond it, turn right onto a narrower path that rises more gently through the trees. Pass a gate, then take the small path onto the knoll. The summit is partly wooded, so the big view arrives at the cairn rather than along the climb. Look south over Balquhidder and Glen Buckie toward Benvane, then turn right to see along Loch Voil with the Braes rising behind it. From the bench, frame the loch lengthwise; it’s the walk’s signature view.
Allow one to two hours with a stop at the top and a look around the churchyard. This mapped route retraces the same track and path, with about 125 metres of ascent. Some directions add a lower return by a footbridge beside a waterfall and an old stone bridge; that variation is outside this mapped distance. Parking by the churchyard is very limited. If it is full, the community hall farther along the road is the established overflow, with a voluntary charge. Dogs are allowed under Scotland’s normal outdoor-access rules; keep them in sight and under control, especially near livestock.
