Historic Kilmun is a small churchyard complex on the shore of the Holy Loch, built around St Munn's Parish Church, a medieval tower and the square Argyll Mausoleum. It is the place to come for a concentrated look at Cowal's church, graveyard and Clan Campbell history, not a big museum or a long walk. Keep it on your list if you like old buildings with a story; skip it if you're looking for a major viewpoint or a long trail.

What to look forThe present church dates from 1841, but the religious site reaches back much further.

The present church dates from 1841, but the religious site reaches back much further. Look for the medieval tower, the mausoleum's cast-iron dome and the weathered gravestones spread across the churchyard. Inside, stained-glass windows made between 1895 and 1924 bring colour to the church, and the 1909 Norman and Beard organ is powered by hydraulic water pressure. It was built when Kilmun had no electricity and is described as the last working water-powered organ in western Scotland.

Duncan Campbell endowed a collegiate church here in 1442, and the site became the burial place of Campbell chiefs and the Dukes and Earls of Argyll. The mausoleum's burials continued until 1949. Look out for the grave of Elizabeth Blackwell, whose ashes were interred here at her request after a career that made her the first woman to graduate in medicine in America and the first woman on the British Medical Register. A guided tour is the best way to connect those names to the buildings instead of just walking through a pretty old churchyard.

Make the stop workParking is available outside the church, with public toilets reported nearby in the graveyard.

Parking is available outside the church, with public toilets reported nearby in the graveyard. The visitor centre and interior visit are seasonal and volunteer-run, while outdoor interpretation panels help when the buildings are closed, so check the current opening information before driving over. There is no confirmed regular food service at the site. For a photo, stand in the churchyard and frame the church and medieval tower with the Holy Loch behind them; the mausoleum's dome gives the view its unmistakable shape.
