“You're coming up on Ardentinny Beach, a broad stretch of sand and shingle on Loch Long backed by forest. It's worth the five-mile single-track approach if you want time by the shore, rather than a quick roadside pause.”

Glenfinart Walled Garden is a volunteer-run community garden in Ardentinny, using the surviving walls of the former Glenfinart House kitchen garden. It is a compact, hands-on stop rather than a grand botanic garden: come for the quiet, the planting, and the pleasure of seeing a historic enclosure used again. The garden is split into five areas—an orchard, a grassed event space with a small bandstand, soft-fruit and vegetable beds with raised beds and a polytunnel, a sensory and reflective garden, and a children’s garden.

Walk the beds, not just the wallTake time to look at how the place works.

Take time to look at how the place works. The orchard holds native apple, pear and plum trees; the growing area produces seasonal fruit and vegetables; and the children’s section includes a willow dome and tunnel, bird hide, bug hotel, strawberry beds and fairy ring. A picnic area and play area make it an easy family stop, while the planting and enclosed paths give adults a reason to slow down. This is worth adding to a village or shore walk; it is not a full-day garden destination on its own. For photos, walk along a planted bed and include the old stone wall behind it; the wall’s unusual curves make the scene recognisably Glenfinart.

Why the walls matterThe garden is Category B listed as part of Glenfinart House’s surviving estate.

The garden is Category B listed as part of Glenfinart House’s surviving estate. Its early-19th-century wall is unusually shaped, with a bowed east side and a curved southwest corner where the river cuts it off. The rubble wall rises about three metres and is capped with flat sandstone; the old north-side greenhouses are gone, with only ruinous brick buildings and other traces remaining. Glenfinart House dates to about 1837; it burned in 1968 and was demolished apart from its tower. You are walking through what was once a private kitchen garden, not an ornamental garden built solely for visitors.

Public access is seasonal and volunteer-led, with groups welcomed by arrangement; check the current opening details before making a special trip. From Dunoon, drive through Ardentinny, turn right after Glenfinart Caravan Park, follow River Road towards the beach, then take the first left after the second bridge. Parking and public toilets are reported by the nearby beach, rather than necessarily inside the garden. The garden is listed as accessible, but detailed information about surfaces, gradients and step-free routes is not published. Bring a picnic if you want to make the stop linger; local seasonal produce may be available, but it is not a guaranteed shop.
