“You're coming up on Ardentinny Beach, a broad stretch of sand and shingle on Loch Long backed by forest. It's worth the five-mile single-track approach if you want time by the shore, rather than a quick roadside pause.”

Hiking Laird’s Trail

A short circuit with a storyThis 2-mile (3.3 km) loop starts at the Finart Bay forest car park.

This 2-mile (3.3 km) loop starts at the Finart Bay forest car park. A short access path is shared on the way in and out; the route circles the bay and climbs through woodland to Laird’s Grave before returning to the shore. Allow about an hour; it is a moderate walk. The grave dates to 1860 and belongs to Archibald Douglas, Laird of Ardentinny. From it, the trail looks across Loch Long. Sunny fields below once held a Forestry Commission nursery that raised thousands of seedlings for forests across Scotland.

Most of the way is wide, firm tarmac or gravel, though loose stones, one slightly uneven stretch and fairly steep slopes break it up. Two openings are 0.9 m wide, and part of the route follows the road. Yellow markers identify Laird’s Trail; other Ardentinny walks link into a larger forest network.
