Ardentinny Beach

Ardentinny Beach is a broad sandy beach on the western shore of Loch Long, just north of Ardentinny village and backed by Ardentinny Forest. It is described as the longest sandy beach on the Cowal Peninsula, and it makes a good stop when you want a bit of shore, a loch view, and an easy way to add some woodland walking to the day. The beach is the reason to come, rather than a full resort-style destination.

The water's edge is a mix of open sand, shingle, rock and seaweed, so there is more to look at than a single sweep of beach. Check the rock pools for crabs and sea anemones, and look across Loch Long toward the hills and Coulport. Ardentinny grew around a ferry crossing to the opposite shore, and the area was later used as a Royal Navy Commando training base during the Second World War. That history gives the shore a little more character than its quiet picnic setting suggests.

The Forestry and Land Scotland car park is just beyond Glenfinart Caravan Park, with picnic tables, public toilets and accessible toilet provision. The last approach from the main road is a roughly five-mile single-track road alongside Loch Eck, so this is better as an unhurried stop than a quick roadside stretch. From the beach area you can also pick up short forest walks, including the 1.3 km Riverside Trail, the 1.6 km Birchwood Trail, or the 3.3 km Laird's Trail. A longer 7.6 km path leads toward Carrick Castle.

There is no lifeguard service, so treat swimming as wild water and pay attention to conditions. For photos, start near the picnic area and include the beach in the foreground with Loch Long beyond it, then walk down to the shore for the rock pools and tree-framed edges. The contrast between pale sand, dark woodland and open water is what makes this beach more memorable than a generic lochside pullout.
