Trail guide
Achray Trail is a moderate out-and-back of ¾ mile (1.2 km) from Achray car park to viewpoints on Loch Achray; that is the full return distance. Allow about 30 minutes. The path descends through birch and pine beside Allt a’ Cham-ruidhe, then reaches the water with Ben A’an rising across it. The short mileage keeps this outing brief, but steep slopes and rough ground make it more demanding than its length suggests.
Follow the stream downhill through the trees. Expect uneven rock and earth underfoot, with occasional mud; the route crosses two bridges. At the loch, look across to the turrets of Tigh Mòr, a former hotel, and the Trossachs Kirk on the opposite shore. Ben A’an makes a clear backdrop for a photo from the water’s edge. The return follows the same path, so save some energy for the climb back up.
The start is Achray car park near the end of Three Lochs Forest Drive. The drive is one-way for vehicles and seasonal; walkers and cyclists can use it year-round, while car access is via the paid drive. Watch for vehicles on the drive. Dogs can come under Scotland’s outdoor-access rules when kept under proper control.
