Sunset Point

Sunset Point is a scenic overlook on the Heritage Trail above the Green River Valley. Forested hills frame the deep river valley that divides the park, making this a broad landscape stop rather than a cave destination.

From the visitor-center area, the trail crosses a pedestrian bridge and follows a raised wooden walkway with low-grade ramps before a flat cement loop. Benches and interpretive panels line the route, and accessible parking is beside the Lodge, about 100 yards from the trail. It is a short surface walk rather than a roadside pullout, and works well as a break between cave tours.

Late-day light can warm the forested hills, but a vivid sunset is never guaranteed; the valley view still has its appeal when the sky stays muted. Spring foliage and autumn color bring their own seasonal change.

Old Guide’s Cemetery is a separate nearby stop on the Heritage Trail. Stephen Bishop, whose grave is there, spent nearly 20 years guiding Mammoth Cave visitors, first while enslaved and later as a free man; he also explored passages that had not been charted.

From the overlook, let the wooded slopes lead toward the river valley; a wide frame holds the layers of hills and canopy. The paved platform, stone wall and interpretive panel give photos a sense of place, while foliage shifts the scene between seasons.
