Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center

This is Mesa Verde’s main visitor and research center, just off US 160 at the park entrance. It is a useful first stop for getting oriented before driving farther to the archaeological areas; the cliff dwellings themselves are elsewhere in the park. Rangers and staff are present to help visitors plan among the park’s opportunities.

Accessible exhibits introduce Ancestral Pueblo culture and daily life, including pottery and farming displays. A large rock display with sculpted figures fills part of the bright, high-ceilinged lobby, and visitors describe the exhibits as a helpful primer for the ladders, tunnels and tours they may encounter farther in. Think of this as a compact introduction to the people and places ahead, rather than a visit to the ruins themselves.

The building combines visitor orientation with research and storage for the park archives and museum collection, which holds more than three million objects. The public displays offer an introduction to that much larger collection, alongside the research library and archive.

The new center replaced Far View as the park’s main orientation facility. Its design considers Mesa Verde’s archaeological, biological and physical resources together, and the landscape project covers 105 acres. Native, drought-tolerant plants were chosen to need no supplemental irrigation once established, with fire-wise planting and local or recycled materials. The project reports that renewable systems supply more than 95 percent of its electricity needs, including solar power, solar hot water, ground-source heat pumps and a micro-hydro turbine; the center earned LEED Platinum certification.
