Sylvan Campsite

Overview

A classic DOC standard campground tucked beside the Routeburn River, Sylvan Campsite is the easy, scenic base for Lake Sylvan and a taster day-walk on the Routeburn. Expect a quiet valley setting, mountain backdrops, and stargazing on clear nights.

Facilities

• About 36 unpowered sites (tents and vehicles)
• Long-drop toilets with hand-washing basin; no showers
• Water taps typically on in summer; in winter they’re off—treat or boil any source water
• No power, and mobile coverage is patchy to non-existent
• No dogs (national park rules)

Nearby walks and wildlife

The Lake Sylvan track starts in camp via the bridge, leading through bird-filled beech forest to a peaceful lakeshore. It’s a mellow, family-friendly outing, and the Routeburn Great Walk road end is close enough for rewarding day walks. The Routeburn River here is fly-fishing only.

Bookings, fees and access

• Bookings required year-round; peak season is December 1–February 28 and public-holiday weekends
• Current fees (NZD): Adult $18/night; Child 5–17 $9; Infant free; DOC Campsite Pass accepted
• Access from Glenorchy via Glenorchy–Paradise Rd → Priory Rd → Kinloch–Routeburn Rd; the section after the Dart River bridge is gravel, and the short entrance can be muddy after rain

Safety and notices

• The campground can flood in heavy rain; avoid pitching in low spots or directly under trees
• Sandflies are prolific—bring strong repellent and cover up at dusk
• Date-specific: an aerial predator-control operation is scheduled for Sunday, November 23, 2025, with access restrictions expected on the Lake Sylvan Track (approximately 11:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m.) and morning restrictions on parts of the Routeburn; heed signage and avoid foraging in treated areas for up to eight months

Best time to visit

For the easiest stay, target late spring through autumn when the taps are typically running and nights are warmer. Summer (Dec–Feb) is busiest—book well ahead. Aim to arrive earlier in the day to pick one of the nicer bays; dusk brings the worst sandflies, while clear nights reward you with big-sky stars.
