Safety

This is a long, exposed mountain route with steep, rough sections and avalanche paths that can cross the track. Weather can turn cold and wet quickly; outside the Great Walk season, DOC says fit, experienced and well-equipped trampers need alpine, river-crossing and navigation skills. The day shelter has a toilet, but no drinking-water supply is listed. No dogs; DOC does not recommend the exposed Great Walk for children under 10.

  • CautionRob Roy Track: stop at lower lookout during avalanche seasonFrom May through November, end your Rob Roy Track hike at the lower lookout; DOC strongly recommends against continuing to the upper lookout because the track crosses active avalanche paths.Official details

Hiking Tarahaka Whakatipu (Harris Saddle)

Tarahaka Whakatipu (Harris Saddle) is a hard out-and-back on the Routeburn Track, from Routeburn Shelter to the day-use Harris Saddle Shelter. It’s about 15.8 miles (25.4 km) round trip; you walk the same trail in and out, and the map shows that corridor once. Set aside 10–12 hours. This is a big mountain day, with a long climb to the alpine basin and the same valley to cover on the way back. It’s worth giving the whole day if you want to see the Routeburn change from river valley to high, open country. If you have half a day, Routeburn Flats makes a much shorter turn-around.

The walk starts gently beside the clear Route Burn, passes Sugarloaf Stream, then climbs to Bridal Veil Waterfall and follows the gorge. A swing bridge takes you onto open, grassed Routeburn Flats, where the Routeburn Flats Hut and campsite sit beside the track. The mix of river, waterfall and open valley makes the first section a satisfying walk on its own. The flats are about 7.5 km one way from the shelter, so turning here gives you roughly a 15 km return rather than the full saddle day.

Up through beech forestPast the flats, the track climbs steadily through beech forest.

Past the flats, the track climbs steadily through beech forest. Views of the Humboldt Mountains open up as you gain height. Routeburn Falls Hut stands near the bushline, beside the cascade, and makes a useful landmark before the route becomes more exposed. It’s an overnight hut, not a café or food stop; carry everything you’ll want to eat on the walk. Keep an ear out for tomtits, robins, kererū and bellbirds, which are commonly seen along the wider Routeburn.

From the hut, the climb continues through wetlands and tussock-covered flats before the track sidles along bluffs above Lake Harris. The path looks down into an ice-carved alpine basin, and the lake and rock walls make the most distinctive view of the day. Stop now and then to look back down Routeburn Valley too; the view opens behind you as well as ahead. For a photo, keep the lake below the rocky ridge so the frame shows the steep basin, not just a strip of water.

Harris Saddle is about 1,255 m and marks the boundary between Mount Aspiring and Fiordland national parks. The day-use shelter and toilet are just beyond the high point. The Routeburn Track carries on over the exposed Hollyford Face toward Lake Mackenzie, but that continuation belongs to the multi-day Great Walk and is not part of this return. Conical Hill is another optional climb from the saddle; it isn’t included in this route either.

A long day in alpine weatherThe upper track is steep and rough in places, and can be muddy or slippery.

The upper track is steep and rough in places, and can be muddy or slippery. Weather changes quickly in this exposed country. DOC identifies avalanche paths along the Routeburn, some of which can reach or cross the track, and says travel outside the Great Walk season needs alpine, river-crossing and navigation skills. Take the current forecast and DOC advice seriously before committing to the full return. The saddle shelter has a toilet, but DOC doesn’t list drinking water there, so don’t count on a refill. Huts on the track have no food service. Dogs aren’t allowed, and DOC doesn’t recommend this exposed mountain route for children under ten.

Routeburn Flats is the best shorter version: it still gets you to the waterfall, gorge and open grassland, then lets you retrace the same path before the long climb toward Routeburn Falls and Harris Saddle. The saddle route earns its extra distance with the wetlands, Lake Harris and the high alpine views, but it’s a poor fit if you need to be back at the shelter early or if the weather is already turning.
