This is a basic four-bunk backcountry hut on a grassy flat at the edge of beech forest in the Matakitaki Valley. Its single room measures 4.2 by 3.7 metres, with the Ella Range rising steeply to 2,000 metres behind it. This is a planned valley tramp, not a quick stop from the road. The hut is first come, first served, with no booking required.

A 2020 account of one approach describes four crossings of the Matakitaki River, including when the water seemed low. Treat that as a record of one trip, not a current conditions report: confirm the route and river conditions before setting out. There is no food service, and no treated water supply is indicated, so plan to carry food and treat water collected along the way. Dogs are not allowed at the hut or anywhere in the park.

The construction date is unknown, but names and graffiti inside date to 1902. It is thought to be the second-oldest wooden hut on conservation land in Nelson and Marlborough. Its early story remains uncertain: it may have been built by Charles Downie as a gold-mining base, or by William Hunter as a musterers’ hut. In the 1940s and 1950s it served musterers and cullers; trampers have used it since.

Beech timber and careful repairsPit-sawn beech forms the frame, vertical wall boards and plank floor.

Pit-sawn beech forms the frame, vertical wall boards and plank floor. Corrugated iron now covers the original split-shingle roof, and a sheet-iron chimney replaced an earlier wooden one. The doorway was moved from the north wall to the east; three windows were added after 1946, and two were removed during conservation work in 1998. From outside, frame the small hut against the open grassy flat and Ella Range to show its scale.
