Parking

The signed road-end car park is reached via Mount Ella Station. The McKellar junction lies along the long Matakitaki Valley approach; the road-end walk to Downie Hut is about 15 km one way. There is no nearby parking at either remote endpoint.

Safety

This is a remote, difficult-to-follow backcountry route. The upper approach crosses steep scree and has consequential route-finding near bluffs; it is unsuitable for casual walkers or anyone without alpine off-track experience.

Hiking McKellar Stream Route

The route and its accessMcKellar Stream Route is a rugged 4.

McKellar Stream Route is a rugged 4.9 km, one-way descent from the upper stream on the Ella Range side to the Matakitaki Valley route. Its mapped line drops from about 1,267 m to 541 m; a 2022 traverse account gives 3.5–4 hours from the stream camp to the valley. This is a remote link in a longer backcountry trip, not a stand-alone day walk.

Along McKellar StreamThe upper stream begins among cascades and mossy trees.

The upper stream begins among cascades and mossy trees. A 2022 account found the route marked and reasonably clear at first, then difficult to follow through lower forest with windfall and thick scrub. The track’s present marking and condition are unverified, so expect to navigate rather than follow a maintained walking track.

Ella Range approachReaching the upper end from the alpine range involves off-track travel.

Reaching the upper end from the alpine range involves off-track travel. The reported approach drops steeply down about 700 m of schist scree; choosing the wrong col led toward bluffs on one traverse. That scree descent is above the mapped stream section, but it is part of the wider route visitors use to reach it.

Matakitaki ValleyAt the lower end, the stream route joins the Matakitaki Valley route.

At the lower end, the stream route joins the Matakitaki Valley route. The road-end car park is reached via Mount Ella Station. The McKellar junction lies along the long Matakitaki Valley approach; the road-end walk to Downie Hut is about 15 km one way. Plan the long approach and exit as part of a through-trip; the mapped 4.9 km does not include them.
