Trail guide
Frankenbury Hill Fort is a gentle 2.6-mile loop from the bus stop outside the Fighting Cocks at Godshill; allow 1–2 hours. Field paths lead into old beech wood along the edge of an Iron Age hillfort, then tracks descend toward Folds Farm. The circuit follows a short stretch of the Avon Valley Path, crosses a stream and returns through fields and woodland. The fort itself is on private land, so this walk stays on public paths at its edge.
Expect hedge-lined field paths, gravel tracks and grassy sections, with gates, stiles and a wooden bridge over a stream. Gradients are gentle overall, but woodland tracks can be muddy; an early stile can become overgrown. Open sections look across the Avon Valley’s wildlife-rich water meadows and pasture, while trees hide much of the fort’s earthwork from the route. Dogs are allowed, but keep them under close control around grazing livestock and wildlife.
Frankenbury was an Iron Age fort covering about 11 acres above the valley. This walk suits someone after a quiet mix of farmland and old woodland more than a close look at the monument: tree cover screens much of the site. A Forestry Commission car park is at Godshill cricket pitch, about 400 metres east along Roger Penny Way; parking at the Fighting Cocks is for pub users.
