Rievaulx Terrace

Overview

About Rievaulx Terrace

Why stop

  • Abbey views framed through woodland
  • Two richly decorated Georgian temples

Heads up

  • Tree cover can screen the Abbey view
  • A short stop on its own
The terrace is an 18th-century landscape garden running along the hillcrest above Rievaulx Abbey, laid out in the 1750s for Thomas Duncombe II. The design is pure theatre: a long curving lawn following the edge of the hill, with gaps cut through the trees so the ruins in the valley below appear, disappear and reappear as you walk. The views arrive framed, one at a time, from high above the abbey ruins.

Best time to go

It makes a short visit, best paired with the abbey below. Walking up from the abbey side is a genuinely steep climb, so drive round if legs are an issue, and parking can be limited at busy times. When the trees are in full leaf, the foliage screens the ruins more than some visitors expect.

Late spring for wildflowers, autumn for colour, and winter for the clearest views through bare branches. Early morning or late afternoon brings softer light down the valley and far fewer people.

“You're coming up on Rievaulx Terrace, an eighteenth-century garden on the hill above the abbey. Walk the long lawn and the ruins appear, vanish behind trees, then reappear in deliberately framed views.”

More about Rievaulx Terrace

What you actually seeTwo temples, one at each end.
  • Two temples, one at each end. The domed Tuscan Temple (mapped in places as the Doric Temple) holds a 13th-century tile pavement brought up from the abbey quire. The pedimented Ionic Temple is a Georgian banqueting house with mythological ceiling paintings.
  • An exhibition in the basement beneath the Ionic Temple, once a below-stairs kitchen, covering how and why the terrace was created.
  • Wildflower-fringed lawns and a woodland walk behind the terrace that loops into a short circular route. The woods include a den-building and wild play area, so families have space for hands-on outdoor play among the trees, with birds and other wildlife around the site.
Practical notesThe entrance is on the B1257, roughly 2.

The entrance is on the B1257, roughly 2.5 miles north of Helmsley, with parking at the terrace and separate mobility parking near the entrance. There are male, female and accessible toilets with baby changing, a gift shop, and grass plus picnic tables in the woodland if you bring lunch. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Food is served at Rievaulx Abbey nearby rather than up on the terrace.

The main stroll is about 1,500 metres round trip and largely level lawn, manageable with an off-road pushchair and for some wheelchair users, though the site is only partly accessible: expect grass, loose gravel and some steps, especially around the temples and in the woods.
