The Environmental Education Visitor Center and Aquarium is the park’s indoor introduction to the reef, beside the main concession and Cannon Beach. Its 30,000-gallon saltwater tank, smaller marine-life displays and maritime exhibits make it an easy stop if you want to understand what the park protects without heading offshore. Treat it as a focused visitor-center stop rather than a full day at a large aquarium.

The big tank holds reef fish among coral, while smaller aquariums show fish, invertebrates and live coral. Natural-history displays and an auditorium with nature films and presentations add context to the marine life. Give yourself time to look closely at the smaller tanks; they show details that can be easy to miss from the main reef display.

The Maritime Heritage Exhibit takes you on a virtual exploration of six shipwrecks near Key Largo, with artifacts and stories from maritime archaeology. It’s a good counterpoint to the fish tanks: the park’s underwater landscape holds both a living reef and a long record of human travel and shipwrecks.

Make it an easy park stopThe center is at 102601 Overseas Highway, near Mile Marker 102.

The center is at 102601 Overseas Highway, near Mile Marker 102.5, beside the main concession and Cannon Beach. Weekend and holiday parking across the park can fill by early afternoon, so arrive earlier if you have a boat trip or beach stop planned too. The building has accessible restrooms, and a beach wheelchair is available by request; assisted-listening devices are available in the auditorium. Blue Heron Café is a separate stop near the boat-embarkation area, with grill food, drinks and ice cream.

The name behind the parkJohn D.

John D. Pennekamp was a Miami newspaper editor whose advocacy helped establish Everglades National Park and preserve this reef area. Florida established the state park in 1963, and it is described as the first undersea park in the United States. The exhibits here connect that conservation history to the reef visitors can explore from shore or by boat.
