Pros & cons
PROS
- Ends at the last working Key lime grove in the Upper Keys
- Compact walk that mixes mangroves, hammock, and history
CONS
- Very short; not a destination on its own
- Mosquitoes and poisonwood make straying off trail a bad idea
Main lot inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park; drive to the far side near the exit and look for the kiosk by the picnic pavilion at the mangrove edge.
Poisonwood along the route; stay on the marked path. Mosquitoes can be intense; use repellent. Uneven footing from loose coral rock. No bicycles allowed.
Overview
A quick, low‑stress stroll, the Grove Trail is a 0.5‑mile round‑trip out‑and‑back through classic Upper Keys habitat. It’s essentially flat and easy, making it a solid leg‑stretch or family walk rather than a half‑day outing.
What You’ll See
You start beside mangroves and slip into a shaded tropical hardwood hammock where gaps in the canopy from past hurricanes dapple the path with light. The tread is dirt edged with coral rock, with occasional loose coral underfoot—watch your step. Keep an eye on smooth‑barked trees for Florida tree snails and listen for birds in the understory.
History You Can Walk Through
The path leads to a small clearing at the former H. J. Shaw farm—once planted with Key limes, oranges, and other fruit after the tropical forest was blasted into planting pockets. The state acquired the land in 1979, and the park still maintains what’s described as the last working Key lime grove in the Upper Keys.
Logistics
Park inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (fees apply), then find the trailhead kiosk by the picnic pavilion at the far side of the main parking area near the mangroves. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Restrooms are at the concession area. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail (not on the beach). Bicycles are not permitted on this trail.
Tips and Cautions
Poisonwood is present—do not brush vegetation and stay on the marked path. Mosquitoes can be active; bring repellent. Footing can be uneven where loose coral pieces collect.
Best Time to Hike
Go early or late for cooler temps and softer light under the canopy. This short, shaded walk works well as a mid‑day break if you’re already in the park, but aim outside peak heat for fewer bugs and a more pleasant experience.
If You Want More
Pair it with the nearby Wild Tamarind Trail or the Mangrove Trail boardwalk loop with its elevated view over the mangroves. Beyond the park, the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail offers longer, paved multi‑use segments if you’re after a bigger day.
