Michigan Creek Campground is a large backcountry beach camp on the West Coast Trail, about 12 km from its north entrance at Pachena Bay. Northbound hikers often make it their first night; it is also a last camp before Pachena Bay for southbound hikers. This is an overnight stop reached on foot, not a road-access campground or day-trip destination.

Plan for a multi-day hikeYou cannot enter or leave the trail at Michigan Creek except for an evacuation.

You cannot enter or leave the trail at Michigan Creek except for an evacuation. The permitted entry and exit points are Pachena Bay, Balaats’adt (Nitinaht Village), and Gordon River. Overnight hikes run May 1 through September 30 and require reservations and a backcountry use permit. Parks Canada closes the trail annually from October 7 through April 30. It is a demanding 75 km route with rough, muddy ground, steep ladders, fast-flowing rivers, and exposed coastal weather; this camp suits experienced backpackers prepared for delays.

Camp among the treesMichigan Creek's beach camp stretches along the shore beneath coastal trees.

Michigan Creek's beach camp stretches along the shore beneath coastal trees. A small trail guide reports outhouses and food-storage lockers here; potable water and food service were not confirmed, so bring what you need and plan to treat water. The creek and beach are part of a weather-exposed backcountry route, so check Parks Canada's current safety information before setting out. Whales are sometimes seen off the beach, though sightings are never guaranteed. For a photo, use the hanging fishing floats and conifers as a foreground and keep the water visible between the trunks.

The West Coast Trail follows ancient paths and paddling routes used for travel and trade by Huu-ay-aht, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht people. Its modern trail history followed repeated shipwrecks along the coast: after the 1906 Valencia wreck killed more than 125 people, Pachena Lighthouse was built in 1907 and the telegraph route was developed into the Dominion Life Saving Trail, with supply shelters for shipwreck survivors and rescuers.
