Elkwood Campground

Overview

Elkwood is the park’s easy-choose, family‑friendly base: 130 forested sites with real amenities, direct access to paved bike paths, and quick reach to the Kananaskis Lakes. It’s a quiet, well‑run operation where sites feel tucked into the trees rather than stacked in a parking lot.

Campsites & Utilities

• 130 total sites: 69 with power/water and 61 unserviced.
• Comfort stations with flush toilets and token‑operated showers; multiple vault toilets scattered through the loops.
• Communal potable water taps around the campground; serviced pads have power/water at the pedestal.
• No sewer at sites and no on‑site dump station—use the area sani‑dump at Canyon Campground (seasonal).

Facilities & Extras

• Showers take tokens (posted at $3 for 5 minutes).
• Playground (notably by Loop B) and an amphitheatre with interpretive programs when running.
• Paved bike paths and nearby trails fan out from the campground.
• Firewood is sold on‑site and also at the Boulton Creek store; secure food storage is provided.

Location & What It’s Good For

You’re minutes from Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes and a web of day hikes. The setting is classic K‑Country: thick forest, mountain views on short rides or strolls, and enough space between sites for real privacy.

Wildlife & Safety

This is active bear and cougar country. Keep a spotless campsite and use the provided food storage. Expect occasional wildlife or area closures—always check current advisories before you roll in.

Season, Water, and Closures

• Typical operating season runs May 7–Oct 11 (weather dependent).
• Water systems generally start up around late May and wind down near early September; outside that window, plan to dry‑camp for water even at serviced pads.
• An amphitheatre/parking/trail construction closure was posted in early September 2025—verify what’s open before you go.

Reservations, Access & Passes

Reservations open 90 days before arrival and summer weekends go fast. A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park anywhere in the area, including at the campground.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for mid‑June through August if you want the best odds of full water service and nightly programs. Midweek stays are noticeably calmer than weekends. Early evenings are lovely for a bike spin to the lakes; mornings tend to be quieter for wildlife watching around trails.

Heads‑Up

There’s little to no cell service, which many people love for the peace and quiet—download maps and any confirmations ahead of time.
