William Watson Lodge

William Watson Lodge is a barrier-free lodging complex overlooking Lower Kananaskis Lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. It serves people with disabilities, Alberta seniors and their families, so plan it as a stay rather than an ordinary walk-up campground: guests must verify eligibility, and the seasonal campground is reserved for lodge clients.

The site includes a main lodge, 22 accessible cabin units, a comfort cabin and a seasonal campground with nine single and one double full-service sites. Alberta Parks lists more than 20 km of accessible trails. Paved paths around the lodge reach a fire pit and playground and connect toward Lower Kananaskis Lake, Elkwood Amphitheatre and the park’s Discovery Centre. The draw is time outdoors with a lake-and-mountain backdrop, without relying on a full-day hike.

The cabins have full kitchens, and guests are asked to bring their own food and drinks; no public dining is listed. Expect little to no cell service and no Wi-Fi, so save your booking details and maps for offline use. Every vehicle also needs a Kananaskis Conservation Pass.

The lodge opened in 1981, inspired by Jeanne Lougheed’s vision for an accessible retreat. It honors William (Bill) Watson (1904–1965), a disability advocate who was denied the chance to article after earning a law degree. The present lodge reopened in June 2022 after two years of accessibility renovations, supported by a $6 million Alberta investment.
