Newspaper Rock

Newspaper Rock is an archaeological petroglyph site in Petrified Forest National Park: a cluster of carved rock faces viewed from a public overlook. More than 650 images cover several dark boulders. I'd stop if you want to see ancient rock art, but expect a view from above rather than a walk among the carvings.

Follow the spur road from the park's main road, then take the short paved path down to a catwalk and overlook. Free fixed spotting scopes help bring individual marks into view. The rock faces stay across the slope: unstable hillsides mean visitors cannot descend to them.

Distance is the main tradeoff. Some visitors make out a lot through the scopes; others find the panels hard to see even with them. Take time to scan each face, and use a camera or phone zoom if you want a closer photograph. If early shadow makes the marks hard to pick out, late morning or early afternoon light may help, though the angle and conditions vary.

The carvings are attributed to ancestral Puebloan people who lived, farmed and hunted along the Puerco River between 650 and 2,000 years ago. Some of the artists may have lived at Puerco Pueblo, less than a mile north. Many people added marks over many generations, so the panels do not tell one continuous story.

Interpretations from modern American Indian communities include family or clan symbols, spiritual meanings, calendar events, territorial boundaries and migration routes. It's a layered record, not a message with one agreed translation.

These are petroglyphs, carved by pecking through the dark desert varnish on the rock to expose the lighter stone underneath. The varnish is a thin natural mineral coating common in dry regions; its darker surface makes the marks stand out. Carvings tend to last longer than painted rock art, though the images still take patient looking to pick out from the overlook.

This is a photo-centric stop, but the viewpoint is part of the experience: compose the boulders below from the catwalk and use zoom for the carved details. The same rock face can look different as shadows move across it, so if the markings blend into the surface, give the light a chance to change before you leave.
