Guide
Weyland Bridge is a stone-supported crossing over the Big Sur River, historically the road bridge toward the east-side Weyland campground. It’s a quick heritage stop rather than a destination to plan a long outing around; the rough, rounded stonework beneath the deck is the detail to notice. Mapping places it on a service road but does not confirm a separate public viewing route, so use only open, authorized access.
The bridge dates to 1936–37, during the Civilian Conservation Corps’ work at Pfeiffer Big Sur. Camp Big Sur opened in fall 1933, and crews used local stone for bridge abutments, fountains, buildings and picnic tables. Here, the masonry is part of the structure, not decoration added afterward.
The original crossing had two large stone supports and a redwood-log deck carried on steel cables. The deck was removed in 1977 and a replica was installed in 1991, according to the historic account. Later bridge plans describe new pedestrian and vehicle spans in the park without saying whether they replaced or altered this crossing, so the present deck’s exact history is unclear. The stonework is the surest part of its story.
From a safe, authorized view, frame the irregular stone support beneath the dark deck; it is the bridge’s clearest feature. No separate public photo viewpoint is verified, so don’t assume there is a route down to the riverbank.
