Guide
Homestead Cabin is a small historic cabin associated with the Pfeiffer family, on the walk from Day-Use Lot 4 toward Big Sur River Gorge. It sits before the river crossing, making it a short heritage pause along the way. The approach is about half a mile and paved; no interior tour is documented, so plan on an exterior look.
Michael and Barbara Pfeiffer arrived in 1869 and settled near Sycamore Canyon; their son John lived along the Big Sur River near this homestead site. Accounts tie the cabin to John and Florence's 1884 home on the river's north bank. They don't establish how much of the present structure is original, so the family connection is firmer than a claim that every board dates from 1884.
John became a devoted, untrained botanist and beekeeper, studying local plants, coastal weather and wildlife. One year's honey harvest reached 16 tons. That gives this little building a bigger story than its size suggests: it marks a family whose daily life was closely tied to the Big Sur River landscape.
The family later welcomed travelers with meals, beds and horses, then opened Pfeiffer Ranch Resort in 1908 at a different site, now occupied by Big Sur Lodge. The modern lodge cabins and Homestead Restaurant are separate stops; this historic cabin is on the gorge approach.
The wooden cabin, uneven fence and broad tree canopy all show in the wide view. Step back enough to include the enclosure; a tight crop loses the wooded setting that makes this small stop read as a homestead.
