Routeburn Track

From Routeburn Shelter, the route runs 7.5 km to Routeburn Flats Hut, 2.3 km to Routeburn Falls Hut, 11.3 km over Harris Saddle to Lake Mackenzie Hut, and 12 km to The Divide. The complete point-to-point distance is about 33 km (20.5 miles) one way. Optional side trips such as Conical Hill and Key Summit are separate routes and are not included in this line.

The track can be walked in either direction. Routeburn Shelter is 25 km from Glenorchy along a partially unsealed road; The Divide Shelter is 85 km from Te Anau. The road distance between the two ends is about 325 km, so arrange transport at both ends or use a shuttle/car relocation. Three huts and two campsites require advance booking during the Great Walks season; outside that season, facilities are reduced and hut places are first come, first served under DOC rules.

Weather changes quickly, with cold, rain, snow, strong winds, river crossings, and avalanche terrain possible. Outside the Great Walks season, the track is for fit, experienced, well-equipped parties with alpine and river-crossing skills; bridges may be removed for winter. There is no cellphone coverage on most of the track. Dogs are not permitted. Take precautions to avoid spreading didymo when crossing streams.
