Parking

Use the Wild Basin Trailhead parking area off Wild Basin Road from CO-7. From the lot, head toward the Finch Lake Trailhead sign; the horse trail branches to the right. A closed winter gate can leave the starting point about a mile before this lot.

Safety

The final spur is faint and ends in a short rock scramble that becomes difficult on snow or ice. Ice climbers may use the waterfall in winter; keep clear of ropes. Do not cross frozen creek ice. A winter gate adds road walking before the trailhead.

“The Wild Basin trailhead is ahead, with a choice of creekside waterfall walks. Lower Copeland Falls is the quick option: about six-tenths of a mile round trip from the summer trailhead.”

This out-and-back follows the direct horse-trail corridor from Wild Basin Trailhead to Hidden Falls. The connected mapped line is about 0.9 mile one way, or 1.8 miles round-trip, and usually takes about 1½ hours with time at the falls. Other accounts describe a longer approach or a return by a different trail; those routes are not included here. The last spur is faint, and its current official trail designation could not be confirmed.

ApproachThe approach is mostly gentle through trees and boulders, with occasional views of North St.

The falls appear suddenly at a tall rock face. Water can run over the face in warmer months and freeze into a broad ice feature in winter. Ice climbing also takes place at the formation; keep clear of ropes and climbing routes.

Winter access and footingSnow and ice can hide the faint spur and make the last scramble more difficult.

Snow and ice can hide the faint spur and make the last scramble more difficult. When the winter gate is closed, the road walk may begin about a mile before the trailhead, changing the total outing distance. Check current access before driving, and do not use a frozen creek as a shortcut or return route. Pets are prohibited on park trails; service animals are allowed.
