Sandbeach Lake

Sandbeach Lake is a high-elevation lake and backcountry camping destination in Wild Basin, reached only by trail. Choose it for a sandy shore and mountain views if you want a full-day hike: it is 4.2 miles each way from the trailhead, with 1,970 feet of climbing. Plan on about four to five hours to reach the lake, which sits at 10,280 feet.

The Sandbeach Lake Trailhead is beside the Wild Basin entrance station, off Highway 7 on Wild Basin Road. The trail climbs in switchbacks to Copeland Moraine, eases for a stretch, then crosses Campers Creek and Hunters Creek on footbridges before a steady final 0.9-mile climb. It passes several backcountry campsites along the way. Snow can linger on the upper trail into late spring, and high-country weather can change quickly; check current trail conditions and bring layers.

At the lake, the sandy edge gives you a foreground for the still water and forested slopes. Look across toward Mount Meeker and Longs Peak. For a photo, keep some of the sand at the bottom of the frame so the reflection and the unusual shore both read clearly. The long approach is the price of getting here, so this is best saved for a day when the hike itself is part of the plan.

The lake's east side has four individual backcountry sites and one group site, plus a privy. There is no treated tap water; the inlet streams on the west side are the listed water source, and it must be boiled or treated. Campfires are prohibited, and overnight campers need bear-resistant food storage from April 1 through October 31. Check the park's current backcountry permit requirements before camping.

The route crosses Copeland Moraine, a lateral moraine, and passes boulders left by glaciers. It is a small geology lesson on the way to the lake: the ridge and scattered rock are part of the glacial landscape that shaped this high basin.
