Wasson Peak

Wasson Peak is the 4,687-foot summit and highest point in Saguaro’s Tucson Mountain District. It’s a hike-in summit, not a drive-up overlook, so save it for a day when you want a substantial climb. A common King Canyon loop is about 7.7 miles round trip with roughly 1,900 feet of climbing; allow 3–4 hours, plus stops. Other trail combinations change the distance.

From King Canyon Trailhead, a common loop climbs through King Canyon to the Sweetwater junction, then follows the ridge toward the summit and returns by Hugh Norris, Sendero Esperanza, and Gould Mine. NPS also describes an approach from Sendero Esperanza over Hugh Norris Ridge, with a 0.3-mile spur to the top. These routes cross several named trails, so check the map before leaving the trailhead and match the distance to your starting point.

Above the saguaros and open desert foothills, the summit opens into broad views over Tucson and the surrounding ranges. Look east toward the Rincon Mountains and north toward the Santa Catalinas; on a very clear day, Picacho Peak may show to the northwest. Take a moment to turn all the way around instead of treating the summit as a quick photo turnaround.

For a photo, use a saguaro or rocky ridge in the foreground, with Tucson and the farther ranges beyond it. That gives a better sense of distance than pointing at an empty skyline.

The Tucson Mountains are a Basin and Range block-fault range. Regional stretching and faulting about 10–15 million years ago helped shape these ridges; later valley fill buried their lower slopes. From the summit, the broad valleys and separated mountain blocks make that structure easy to read.

Much of the climb is exposed, and the steady uphill and switchbacks make water and sun protection essential. Aim for cooler weather or start early, and carry all the food and water you need: there’s no food service or potable water at the summit or along the route. Reports conflict about toilets at King Canyon Trailhead, so don’t count on one there.
