About Sendero Esperanza to Wasson Peak

Why go

  • Wide valley views from the ridge and summit
  • A shorter ridge-only turnaround avoids the summit climb

Heads up

  • Eight miles round trip with a steep, rocky climb in exposed desert
This is an 8-mile out-and-back from Sendero Esperanza Trailhead to Wasson Peak, returning along the same line. Allow about five hours for the hike and time at the top; the park lists about 1,600 feet of elevation change. The first mile is comparatively level, but the climb steepens at the ridge and continues to the summit. Choose the full route if you want the Tucson Mountains high point; for a shorter outing, the ridge-only return is about 3.4 miles.

The north trailhead begins on broad, mostly level tread with soft sandy patches and saguaros. After about a mile, Sendero Esperanza climbs more sharply on switchbacks. This ridge section is rocky, with a few short staircases and one eroded rut. The first broad views of the valley open on the climb, giving you a good reason to pause before the summit push.

At the Hugh Norris junction, turn left and east toward Wasson Peak. The west branch leads to Hugh Norris Trailhead; Sendero Esperanza also continues beyond the ridge into a different route. For this hike, keep to the eastbound Hugh Norris line, then return by the same trail rather than linking in those other branches.

The Sonoran cactus forest around the route is part of the landscape that inspired Saguaro National Park's creation in 1933. From the ridge, the shift from cactus-covered foothills to the broad valley below makes the park's desert setting especially clear.
