Overview

About Sendero Esperanza Trail Big Loop

Why go

  • A long ridge climb with broad desert-basin views.
  • The return changes from rocky Bajada Wash to sandy Dobe Wash.

Heads up

  • Steep switchbacks and exposed desert mileage make this a demanding day.
  • Loose sand in Dobe Wash can make the tread hard to follow.
Sendero Esperanza Trail Big Loop is an 8.5-mile circuit from Sendero Esperanza Picnic Area, climbing to the Hugh Norris ridgeline before dropping to the west-side trailhead and returning by Bajada Wash, Dobe Wash and Sendero Esperanza. Allow about five to six hours and expect roughly 1,200 feet of total climbing. This is a full desert day for hikers who want both a substantial ridge walk and long wash sections. It is longer than the separate 6.6-mile Hugh Norris-starting loop, so use the Sendero picnic area as your start for this version.

The first mile is comparatively gentle; then the trail steepens on switchbacks up to the Hugh Norris ridge. Steps and repeated turns make the climb steady work, but views keep opening as you gain height. The ridge gives you the wide desert basin below and westward views toward the Roskruge Mountains and Ironwood Forest. Take a breather at the saddles and look both ways before starting the descent.

From the ridge, the route follows Hugh Norris west and descends to its trailhead. Cross Hohokam Road, pick up the connector to Bajada Wash, then follow the wash northeast toward Dobe Wash. Bajada is a narrower, rockier section, with boulders, saguaros and a short riparian feel. Dobe Wash is sandier: gravel can hide the tread, so keep an eye out for the trail signs at junctions. Sendero Esperanza brings you back to the picnic area.

Saguaros, cholla, paloverde and creosote cover the lower climb; ocotillo, prickly pear and cholla show up near the ridge. The wash crossings pass water-carved granite, a change from the cactus-covered slopes above. Hugh Norris, whose ridge gives this hike its high point, was a Tohono O’odham community leader and police officer.

The Sendero Esperanza Picnic Area has a large lot with room for RVs and buses, restrooms and accessible picnic tables. There is no food service along the loop, and a water refill on route could not be confirmed, so carry what you need for the full distance. Summer highs can reach the mid-90s to low 110s; the park advises hiking before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Monsoon storms can flood the washes. Dogs are prohibited on park trails.
