Halstead Meadow Picnic Area is a roadside picnic spot on Generals Highway beside a restored 20-acre wetland, north of Lodgepole. It suits a meal or an easy pause on a drive through the park; the meadow's restoration story is the reason to give it more than a passing glance. I'd fold it into a Generals Highway day rather than plan a major detour around it.

Set up for a simple picnicThe site has picnic tables, vault toilets, interpretive exhibits, and barbecue grills.

The site has picnic tables, vault toilets, interpretive exhibits, and barbecue grills. Grills can be unavailable during fire restrictions. The park's picnic areas aren't plowed, so snow can make this stop inaccessible. Bears sometimes approach picnic areas; keep food within arm's reach while eating.

A meadow that needed rebuildingGrazing and road drainage left Halstead Meadow with erosion gullies and dried wetland soils.

Grazing and road drainage left Halstead Meadow with erosion gullies and dried wetland soils. A road across the meadow, completed in 1934, concentrated water through culverts. A bridge finished in 2012 reconnected the upper and lower meadow, restoring sheet flow for the first time in 80 years. The restoration also added 87,800 native plants and half an acre of wetland sod. That history gives this otherwise simple roadside stop a real sense of purpose.
